dWeb Partners with Flare Network to Develop Sub-Level Domain Naming System

The decentralized web (dWeb) Foundation has inked a partnership with layer-1 blockchain Flare Network to develop sub-level domain naming system on the network, a press release shared with crypto.news reads.

dWeb Foundation to Build on Flare Network

The dWeb Foundation is set to build on the Flare Network. The announcement states the partnership with Flare Network is the next step in the dWeb Foundation’s journey toward building a fully-decentralized, permissionless internet powered by blockchain technology.

The significance of the internet in the 21st century cannot be understated. Virtually all the facets of an individual’s life are connected to the worldwide web that bridges the physical distance among people living the world over.

Top-Level Domains (TLD) such as “.com” and “.org” power most of the websites today. However, there’s a major problem associated with such domains in that the data stored on them are mostly controlled by big tech.

Subsequently, we witness frequent privacy issues, single points of failure, and the lack of data sovereignty. Rising centralization over data has led to repeated database exploits and scams.

Here’s where the dWeb Foundation comes in.

As a solution, the dWeb Foundation offers a read-write-own internet built atop its flagship decentralized technology dubbed Handshake Naming System (HNS).

HNS gives back the control to users, enabling any peer to validate and manage the root DNS naming zone. Accordingly, the mechanism eliminates the centralized current state of the internet DNS hierarchy.

It must be highlighted that there are only 13 DNS root servers that support most internet sites with the US Department of Defense, US Army, Verisign and ICANN each operating one root server.

HNS to Integrate Flare Protocol

The partnership will see HNS integrate Flare’s powerful smart contract functionality and infrastructure to host a sub-level domain (SLD) naming system. Specifically, Flare will be used to anchor the TLD – to create domains such as .flare – and then issue the SLD (such as xyz.flare) on the Flare blockchain.

In essence, the State Connector will connect the Handshake TLD with the SLD domains on Flare.

In this way, by bringing together the power of HNS’ TLDs with Flare’s robust, ultra-low carbon functionality to host and maintain the SLDs in a decentralized, immutable way on their blockchain, users will benefit from a new version of the internet that is decentralized, more transparent, censorship-resistant, and secure.

Commenting on the development, Chjango Unchained, Executive Director of dWeb Foundation, said:

“The domain name market is slated to grow to a $1+ Billion industry by 2027. Handshake breaks open the traditional TLD namespace by creating a permissionless process of adding customizable TLDs to it. By building Layer 2 infrastructure on top of Handshake’s Layer 1, decentralized SLDs can accelerate that growth trajectory and possibly exceed it by orders of magnitude.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by Hugo Phillon, CEO and Co-founder, Flare Network.

He said:

“Flare is excited to partner with dWeb to provide smart-contract functionality to Handshake’s decentralized internet technology. Flare’s role in hosting SLDs is a compelling factor in this collaboration, fulfilling our vision for a peer-to-peer, immutable and accessible internet experience. We are pleased to be working alongside the dWeb team to drive this reality forward.”
