Here’s Why People Are Marrying on the Blockchain

Here’s Why People Are Marrying on the Blockchain

In early 2021, two Coinbase employees, Rebecca Rose and Peter Kacherginsky, decided to tie the knot using the blockchain. Each of the two lovers created NFTs as their virtual wedding bands, stored on the blockchain. The wedding was just one of many other weddings on the blockchain.

The first-ever blockchain wedding was in 2014, between David Mondrus and Joyce Bayo. The couple used the bitcoin blockchain to add their vows. An Indian couple, Anil Narasipuram and Shruti Nair, also tied knots on blockchain in early February 2022. So, why are blockchain marriages becoming prevalent? Here are some reasons.

To Make Their Love Immortal

The words used in wedding oaths, “till death does us part,” indicate how people want their marriages to last. Immutability and permanency are the two main attributes of each blockchain. The above means that blockchain is immortal and keeps records of events forever.

Blockchains can keep records of transactions forever, without a possibility to delete or destroy. Hence, people create blockchain marriage certificates to signify their everlasting love.

Moreover, people tying the knot use NFT virtual wedding bands. In the case of the several blockchain marriages already done, the NFTs act as virtual rings. By using virtual certificates and wedding bands, the participants immortalize their marriages. For instance, the Coinbase couple created an NFT called Tabaat, providing them with tokenized rings.

Blockchain-based assets like NFTs can last forever, and so should marriages. The love is uncensorable and unstoppable; there will be evidence forever.

Cost Friendly Weddings

Another reason why blockchain weddings are gaining fast traction is their affordability. Weddings are a vital part of a couple’s marriage, and we like to share them with many if not all our friends.

However, statistics indicate that the costs of weddings in recent times have been extremely high. Some sources show that the average wedding cost was nearly $30 thousand in 2019, with the venue being the single most expensive thing.

However, the blockchain can make things even simple. For instance, the Indian couple, Anil Narasipuram and Shruti Nair, recently tied their knot in February 2022. According to them, their transaction costs around $35 in ETH gas fees.

The Coinbase employees, Rebbeca and Peter, mentioned earlier, used just about $0.25 ETH, $450 on the wedding day. They incurred a further cost, sending their total to $537. It’s true to say that a blockchain wedding could cost a minimum of $1000, including the venue.

Enjoy the Flexibility Brought by Blockchain

Flexibility is something else that blockchain weddings may enjoy. For instance, take the example of people from different countries, let’s say it’s a marriage between a Filipino and US citizen.

The US and Philippines have very different guidelines on weddings and marriages. In the Philippines, all aliens must provide US documentation when filing for marriage. That may involve several office visits, especially since the US does not maintain a central statistical database of marriages, deaths, and births.

But, with people switching to blockchain weddings, things will be slightly simple. For instance, the documentation can be easily created on a blockchain and made available in both countries. Moreover, the blockchain certification will be enough in both countries.

Blockchain Marriage is Decentralized

Marriage registration often requires full adherence to several rules from application to completion. Those doing church weddings must adhere to the laws and regulations set by the institution. Hence, the union of marriage always has a regulatory institution around it.

However, the blockchain introduces simplicity. You can get married under your terms, in your own time of day. Indeed, that fosters complete decentralization.

Interest in Blockchain is Increasing

Another reason why blockchain marriages have become very common recently is the growing interest in crypto. Today, like no other time in blockchain history, people are gaining crypto knowledge. The number of wallets is growing, and so are the numbers of people talking about the blockchain space.

The development of systems like NFT, Defi, and Metaverse has helped increase the interest in blockchain. Now more than ever, many people want a share of the blockchain pie; hence why blockchain marriages are becoming a thing.

Also, consider the current pandemic period. Large gatherings have been discouraged vastly by governments. Hence, hosting blockchain weddings can prove simpler since there are no large gatherings.
