A podcast is simply a collection or series of digital audio files that can be downloaded or listened to on the internet. Podcasts are normally hosted by an individual or persons who lead a conversation, share stories, or create news reports. The anchor or creator of a podcast is known as a podcaster.
In its early days, podcasting was an obscure method of disseminating audio information. However, podcasting has gained serious popularity in recent years to become a recognized medium for audio content distribution for both corporate and personal use.
While podcasts are similar to radio programs since they both exist in audio formats in most cases. However, unlike radio programs, podcasts can be downloaded and played at a listener’s convenience, anytime and anywhere.

A podcast is a portmanteau, as the word is derived from both iPod and broadcast. The term podcasting was originally coined by Ben Hammersley, a Guardian columnist, and BBC journalist, in February 2004, while drafting an article for The Guardian newspaper.
The term podcast was first used in the audio blogging community in September 2004, when Danny Gregoire used it in his message to the iPodder-dev mailing list, and it was then adopted by podcaster Adam Curry.
Despite the etymology, podcasts can be accessed via any internet-enabled computer or similar devices that play media files. While some people may think that podcasting or the podcast term was invented by Apple, it should be noted that the word predated the tech giant’s integration of the podcasting feature to the iPod, or its iTunes software.
For those who are unaware, the first-ever application to make podcasting possible was known as iPodderX. The iPodderX was developed by August Trometer and Ray Slakinski. Fueled by the evolution of the Internet, by 2007, audio podcasts had become quite popular just like radio broadcasts.
Presently, there are various podcast hosting platforms in existence, including Buzzsprout, Captivate, Transistor, and a host of others.
As of December 2021, there were a massive 4,449, 114 million podcast programs registered across the globe, up from 4,180,000 million in September 2021.
