Scammers attack Matthew Perry’s X account, promote crypto
In a now-deleted X post, scammers impersonated the Matthew Perry Foundation and urged people to donate via crypto.
As reported by Rolling Stone, scammers targeted the X account of the late “Friends” star Matthew Perry, promoting crypto donations through a fraudulent website impersonating the Matthew Perry Foundation.
In a follow-up update on Instagram, the foundation warned against engaging with the fake website or sharing the fraudulent post on social media. The foundation also urged followers to report impostor accounts and to only donate through MatthewPerryFoundation.org.
The Matthew Perry Foundation is a donor-advised fund established in November 2023 to honor Matthew Perry’s commitment to helping individuals struggling with addiction.
Perry tragically passed away in late October 2023 from drowning at his Los Angeles home. An autopsy report later revealed the presence of “high levels of ketamine” in his bloodstream, believed to have caused his unconsciousness and subsequent drowning. Contributing factors included coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine.
As crypto.news earlier reported, MicroStrategy, the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder, also fell victim to a cyberattack on its X account. Hackers posted a message promoting a fake “MSTR” token, resulting in the theft of nearly $500,000 in crypto.
