Ethereum’s Buterin and Polygon’s Nailwal donate $100m for COVID-19 research
Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has teamed up with Sandeep Nailwal, the co-founder of Polygon, to direct $100 million toward COVID-19 research and the development of medical infrastructure in India. This philanthropic effort aims to address the long-term impacts of the pandemic and bolster healthcare systems.
Buterin is making a significant contribution to address pressing global challenges. This time, Buterin has joined forces with Sandeep Nailwal, the co-founder of Polygon, to direct $100 million towards COVID-19 research and medical infrastructure development, focusing on tackling “long COVID” and enhancing healthcare systems.
As part of this collaborative effort, Crypto Relief, an India-based crypto fund, will provide $90 million in USD Coin (USDC) to Buterin and Nailwal. An additional $10 million will be contributed by Buterin himself, demonstrating his commitment to the cause. The duo will then work together to ensure the efficient distribution of funds to the designated projects.
Crypto Relief, led by Sandeep Nailwal, is a community-run fund that provides financial relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. In line with their mission, the first installment of funds received from Buterin and Nailwal was allocated towards emergency humanitarian relief to combat the pandemic in India.
Buterin’s vision for a safer future
In a recent Twitter post, Buterin highlighted the persistent risks posed by COVID-19 and future pandemics, emphasizing the need for a global solution. Buterin believes such a solution should blend frontier scientific innovation with on-the-ground implementation.
He believes that finding public health solutions that respect people’s rights and freedom while remaining accessible to all is crucial. Buterin aims to ensure that people stay alive and healthy and enjoy fulfilling lives worth living.
Buterin’s involvement in philanthropic efforts extends beyond the current endeavor. In May 2021, he contributed 50 trillion SHIB tokens, equivalent to $1.2 billion, to the India Covid Relief Fund in a single transaction. Furthermore, in April 2022, Buterin donated $5 million worth of Ether (ETH) to “Aid for Ukraine” to support the country’s defense against Russia’s invasion.
The collaboration between Vitalik Buterin and Sandeep Nailwal marks a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against COVID-19. By directing $100 million towards COVID-19 research and medical infrastructure development, Buterin and Nailwal aim to address the long-term consequences of the pandemic and strengthen healthcare systems.
This philanthropic effort underscores the importance of global cooperation and combining scientific innovation with practical implementation to effectively combat present and future pandemics.
