What is Kaspa (KAS)?

Kaspa is a decentralized layer-1 proof-of-work (PoW) solution that uses the GHOSTDAG system. It aims to address the scalability challenges of PoW blockchains while maintaining high security.

The platform’s native token, KAS coin, serves as the medium of exchange for on-chain transactions and mining rewards distribution.

Who are Kaspa’s founders?

Kaspa is the brainchild of two researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Yonatan Sompolinsky and Aviv Zohar. The two computer experts have published multiple articles on blockchain protocols and consensus techniques, and they’ve also worked on other blockchain projects, including SPECTRE and GHOSTDAG.

What makes Kaspa unique?

The most noticeable distinction between Kaspa and regular blockchains is the use of GHOSTDAG. The protocol aims to avoid the traditional trade-off between security, scalability, and decentralization that has beset older blockchains like Bitcoin.

Kaspa also contains a monetary strategy that reduces emissions exponentially over time using the 12-note musical scale. This policy, known as the chromatic phase, went into effect on May 7, 2022, with a block reward of 440 KAS.

How is the Kaspa network secured?

The Kaspa network is secured through a proof-of-work mechanism utilizing the k-Heavyhash algorithm. Miners play a crucial role in ensuring the security of the network.

Additionally, using peripheral nodes, Kaspa intends to mitigate miner extractable value (MEV) concerns. MEV means the profit miners can potentially gain by reordering or including specific transactions in blocks, which can impact the fairness and transparency of transaction execution. Also, the platform is designed to distribute consensus power more evenly among participants, contributing to a more decentralized mining ecosystem.

The use of a directed acyclic graph (DAG) instead of a single chain aims to further enhance security by reducing double-spending. The DAG structure forms the foundation for the GHOSTDAG protocol.

How many Kaspa (KAS) coins are in circulation?

KAS went live in November 2021 without re-mining, pre-sales, or token allocations. Since then, about $25,199,114,700 Kaspa tokens have been created.

The Kaspa crypto has a maximum supply of 28.7 billion coins. The coin’s circulation is managed with an emission schedule that halves the supply annually through seamless monthly drops.

Buying and storing KAS coin

KAS can be purchased on various platforms such as CoinEx, Uphold, KuCoin, Bitget, and LBank. After buying your KAS, you can store them in various wallets, including the full-node Kaspa desktop wallet (KDX) or the command-line version, which comes bundled with Kaspa’s core node software.

FAQs

What is Kaspa coin used for?

Kaspa (KAS) is the native cryptocurrency of the Kaspa ecosystem, and it is mainly used to reward mining node operators based on their contribution to the Kaspa network.
The coin is also the main medium of exchange for on-chain transactions and services, including giving users access to decentralized applications (DApps) built on the L1 platform.

Does Kaspa have a halving?

Yes, Kaspa has a halving. Its total supply is 28.7 billion coins, whose issuance schedule is halved yearly via gradual monthly reductions.
The halving is styled on a 12-note musical scale, where the reduction between one month and the next equals the frequency ratio between two consecutive semitones in a musical scale. In this context, a year (or octave) is 365.25 days, and a month (or semitone) is precisely one-twelfth of a year.
The initial block reward, which was 440 KAS, represents the frequency of the note A4, and each month it is reduced by a factor of (1/2)^(1/12).

Is Kaspa a privacy coin?

No, Kaspa is not categorized as a privacy coin. However, it claims to combine fast block times with strong security through its proof-of-work consensus mechanism to enable privacy in transactions before they are confirmed. In that way, Kaspa could safeguard users against issues like transaction manipulation.

What problem is Kaspa trying to solve?

Kaspa was designed to address the blockchain trilemma, a concept coined by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin that suggests a trade-off between security, decentralization, and scalability when building blockchains.
Kaspa aims to achieve this via its BlockDAG architecture, which enhances security and scalability while staying true to the longest-chain rule. This rule requires nodes to adopt the longest chain of blocks in a network.
Kaspa also aims to ensure decentralization through its community-focused decision-making process and distributed network of nodes.

How to mine Kaspa

To mine Kaspa, follow the steps below:
1. Get suitable hardware, such as a GPU with at least 6 GB of memory. ASICs and CPU cards are not efficient for mining Kaspa.
2, Obtain a wallet address to receive your mining rewards. You should consider using a reputable wallet provider or exchange that supports KAS, including online wallets such as wallet.kaspanet.io or exchanges such as MEXC and TradeOgre.
3. Sign up for an account on a mining pool that supports Kaspa mining, such as Kaspa-pool or f2pool. It’s easier and more economical to mine KAS with a mining pool, where you combine your computational power with others to increase your chances of solving the complex mathematical problems required to obtain KAS.
4. Configure Kaspa mining software like lolMiner, GMiner, BzMiner, or SRBMiner, following the provided command lines, to either mine KAS alone or mine it alongside other coins like Ethereum Classic (ETC) or EthereumPoW (ETHW).
5. Save the start file and double-click it to begin mining. Make sure to monitor your hashrate and rewards and manage your account through your mining pool dashboard or app.

When was Kaspa coin made?

Kaspa was introduced to the public on Nov. 7, 2021. The coin and the platform it powers were the brainchild of Yonatan Sompolinsky and Aviv Zohar and were developed by R&D company DAGLabs with investment from PolyChain.
The KAS team made the coin available via a fair launch, meaning no portion of the coin’s total supply was pre-mined or pre-allocated before becoming accessible to the general public.
