SMBC Nikko plans Japan DeFi gateway with Uniswap

SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind have signed an MoU with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation to build a Japan-focused DeFi Gateway targeted for completion by mid-2027.

Summary
  • SMBC Nikko and Nethermind signed an MoU with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation Thursday.
  • Mid-2027 is the target for completing Japan’s planned DeFi Gateway project, according to the partners.
  • Uniswap v4 hooks will be used to add AML, counterterrorism financing and investor protection controls.
  • Base will support deployment and x402 integration, while Nethermind leads engineering, AI and smart-contract security.
  • Project progress will be shared with Japan’s FSA, but no live product has launched yet.

SMBC Nikko said on Oct. 2 that the five organizations will develop a liquidity-provisioning protocol and custom pools intended to give Japanese investors a controlled route into decentralized finance. The announcement describes the work as a development project and does not say Japan’s Financial Services Agency has approved a product for public use.

The project expands work SMBC Nikko and Nethermind announced in March. Their earlier research focused on connecting Japanese investors with automated market makers while testing risk controls, user safeguards and AI tools. The October MoU brings Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation into the project with defined technical roles.

How will Japan’s DeFi Gateway work?

The Oct. 2 release says the partners plan an open framework for liquidity pools using Uniswap v4 hooks. The proposed hooks would add anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing and investor protection mechanisms around pool activity.

Uniswap Labs introduced Permissioned Pools in July, using a v4 hook standard that checks issuer-managed allowlists before approved wallets can swap or provide liquidity. The company said compliance rules can therefore be enforced at the pool level instead of relying only on a website or offchain check.

The Japan project goes beyond an existing Uniswap product. SMBC Nikko’s release says the group will refine and validate automated market-making and v4 hook strategies for Japan, including token and protocol due diligence. No supported tokens, customer eligibility requirements, fees or minimum investment amounts were disclosed.

Stablecoins and real-world assets are included in the proposed liquidity work. The MoU says the participants will develop asset-deployment strategies covering digital assets such as stablecoins and RWAs, but it does not identify an issuer, stablecoin or tokenized security committed to the gateway.

What will Uniswap, Base and Nethermind build?

Under the MoU, SMBC Nikko will lead regulatory discussions while contributing expertise in compliance, risk modeling and portfolio management. Nethermind is responsible for technical design and delivery across engineering, AI integration and smart-contract security.

Uniswap Labs will provide expertise in protocol integration and liquidity-deployment strategies. Nyx Foundation will advise on market-making strategies and hook structures, while Base will support deployment in its Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem.

Base’s work includes technical feedback around x402, an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase. Coinbas says x402 allows software and AI agents to make stablecoin payments for APIs and online services using HTTP payment requests.

The partners are separately exploring what the announcement calls “agentic vaults” using verifiable and reproducible AI. SMBC Nikko defines the proposed systems as AI tools that could support or execute investment decisions, while its March research described automation operating within predefined parameters instead of giving AI unrestricted control.

How did SMBC Nikko’s DeFi project start?

SMBC Nikko and Nethermind announced their initial research partnership on March 6. The companies said the work would explore secure and controlled access to DeFi markets, with automated market makers serving as its first area of study.

During that earlier phase, the partners examined smart contracts, AI and zero-knowledge proofs. SMBC Nikko said agentic AI could help apply user-defined risk preferences and support controlled trading or asset allocation, while Nethermind supplied blockchain, AI and security expertise.

The two companies later presented a conceptual DeFi access gateway at Yield Summit 2026. The October agreement moves the work from the original two-company research project into a five-party development structure and provides a mid-2027 completion target.

Uniswap’s existing compliance tools provide another technical reference. As crypto.news reported, Uniswap v4 Permissioned Pools for regulated onchain trading allow approved addresses to swap or supply liquidity while normal Uniswap v4 pools remain permissionless.

What happens before the mid-2027 target?

SMBC Nikko says the DeFi Gateway is “expected to be completed by mid-2027.” Development progress will be shared with government and regulatory authorities, including the FSA, as discussions continue over the appropriate rules for DeFi in Japan.

The wording does not amount to regulatory approval. The partners have not announced a public launch date, final customer-access model or completed legal structure for the proposed liquidity pools.

Japan’s digital-asset regulatory structure has been changing while the project is developed. FSA created a dedicated crypto and stablecoin division in August, bringing crypto supervision, digital payments and related policy work under a specialized unit.

During 2026, the FSA published material covering financial-crime risks in DeFi, stablecoins and self-hosted wallet transactions. A July notice concerning a FATF DeFi report discussed money laundering, terrorism financing and proliferation-financing risks, including questions around entities exercising control or sufficient influence over DeFi services.

Stablecoin projects involving Japan’s largest banks are moving on a similar calendar. Japan’s three megabanks targeting stablecoin transactions by March 2027 formed a council covering issuance infrastructure, governance, operating rules and future participation.

Base has meanwhile seen growing trading activity in tokenized securities. Crypto.news reported that Base tokenized-stock DEX volume reached $100 million in one day in September, while Uniswap v4 handled $139.3 million of such trades during the preceding 30-day period measured by Token Terminal.

SMBC Nikko has not said the assets behind those trading figures will be available through its Japanese gateway. Before any customer rollout, the five participants still need to complete the technical framework, test the proposed pool controls and continue discussions with Japanese authorities.
