Bitcoin Gets Its Own Emoji on Twitter; Crypto Community Celebrates

Major microblogging platform, Twitter, recently added the bitcoin emoji on its platform, which appears after a hashtag and the word ‘bitcoin’. The inclusion of a bitcoin emoji saw the crypto community on Twitter burst with excitement, with many praising the platform’s CEO and co-founder, Jack Dorsey, as a true bitcoin supporter.

Bitcoin Emoji Now on Twitter

Per a report on Coindesk on Sunday, February 2, 2020, Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter and mobile payments company, Square, revealed via a tweet the appearance of the bright yellow bitcoin symbol just after ‘#bitcoin’, indicating that bitcoin now had an emoji on Twitter.

With Dorsey’s tweet came an avalanche of positive responses from the crypto community who were greatly pleased, and proceeded to tweet the special hashtag furiously to make sure it went viral. The Twitter CEO received tons of accolades from members of the community, with many hailing Dorsey for being a consistent supporter of bitcoin.

Twitter charges up to $1 million for companies/brands willing to get a hashtag with a branded emoji to drive consumer traffic and make them stand out among competitors. However, creating a bitcoin emoji for free showed Dorsey’s massive love for the flagship cryptocurrency.

Industry heavyweights also caught the excitement bug, as a good number of them welcomed the addition. Tron’s Justin Sun and Binance’s Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao joined the crypto community to push the bitcoin hashtag with the new emoji, with Zhao tweeting: Let’s do this’. Morgan Creek’s Anthony Pompliano was also excited that bitcoin finally had an emoji on Twitter.

More commendations came from Pritzker, the author of “Inventing Bitcoin” who wrote this:

“Yesterday twitter released a custom emoji for the bitcoin hashtag. The CEO and founder of Twitter (biggest communication platform in the world) and Square (#1 financial app in the app store) has the single word #bitcoin in his profile. Don’t sleep on this. You’ve been warned”.

Although the emoji is not widely supported across various social media platforms, Dorsey tagging Unicode’s official Twitter handle is a way of urging the consortium to make the bitcoin symbol a Recommended For General Interchange (RGI) emoji.

Dorsey’s Continued Love for Bitcoin

Jack Dorsey’s endorsement of bitcoin does not come as a surprise, as the Twitter CEO is known to be an advocate of the dynamic crypto industry. As reported by BTCManager back in December 2019, Dorsey toured Africa, in order to encourage bitcoin adoption in the continent.

The Twitter CEO revealed in the past that bitcoin was the only digital currency in his possession. Recently, Square’s cryptocurrency arm introduced a Lightning Development Kit (LDK) to help solve problems that bitcoin developers face and improve user experience.
